Mindfulness-based programmes (MBPs) are designed to cultivate awareness, presence, and resilience. While these programmes share a common foundation, they also allow for flexibility to meet the needs of diverse populations and contexts. This balance between consistency and adaptability can be understood through the metaphor of warp and weft—two essential components of weaving.

The Warp: The Unchanging Framework
The warp represents the strong, consistent threads that form the backbone of any MBP. These elements ensure the programme remains authentically “mindfulness-based”:
• Core Theoretical Basis
MBPs are grounded in well-established principles of mindfulness, focusing on skills such as attention regulation, decentring, and self-awareness. These principles underpin the programme’s integrity and effectiveness.
• Key Practices
Central practices—such as meditation, mindful movement, and inquiry—are non-negotiable. They provide the experiential foundation for participants to develop mindfulness skills.
• Teacher Expertise
Skilled teachers are essential. Their deep understanding of mindfulness and the programme structure safeguards fidelity and supports participants’ learning journey.

The Weft: Adaptable Threads
The weft represents the flexible, contextual elements woven through the warp. These variations allow MBPs to remain relevant and responsive:

• Stick to the sequence: Follow sessions in order. It’s better to take your time than rush through. If short on time, aim to cover at least the first 3–4 sessions rather than skipping ahead.
• Focus on essentials: Teach the core practices and concepts; optional sections can wait.
• Break it down: Short on time or energy? Split sessions into smaller chunks—editable presentations make this easy.
• Repeat if needed: Revisiting a session can deepen understanding.
