Step 3:
Develop mindfulness
To begin to develop a sustainable model for mindfulness offered in-house to students and building a community to share mindfulness support and connection within the setting.
We have some recommended actions and activities that will support developing a model for mindfulness in your setting. These ideas are just a suggested starting point and if other ways of developing mindfulness would work better for your setting, please do that.
If you want to keep a record of how you are developing mindfulness in your setting/school, you could build a MiSP portfolio (optional) and you might collect evidence of these suggested activities or a record of your own ideas. A completed portfolio will be needed to apply for Step 5 of the Pathways.
Suggested Activities
Suggested actions/activities could include:
Student focused:
- At least one staff member is trained to deliver either dots/Paws b/The Present or the .b curriculum
- dots/Paws b/The Present or .b is being taught as part of regular curriculum time, e.g. as part of a carousel of subjects within a year group, OR as part of PSHE, OR integrated within a curriculum area (explore how the MiSP curricula maps to PSHE and/or the Curriculum for Wales), OR in form time/registration, OR as a formal after-school programme of learning e.g enrichment time
- If an external dots/Paws b/The Present or. b teacher introduces the students to mindfulness, an established and ongoing commitment to this relationship has been agreed, with an ongoing rolling programme planned
- Weekly drop-in student mindfulness club offered, to support ongoing student practice development
- Once an experienced individual or group of regular attendees forms, as part of the mindfulness club, a second stage/phase of this could involve an individual or group becoming Mindfulness Leaders in the school
- Mindfulness invitations/suggestions are offered regularly to students and staff to encourage practice – through form time or start of the day, at least once a week (could be in the daily bulletin or other information-sharing mechanism with year groups or whole school)
- Attend a MiSP School Sit Together with students, to connect with wider community of mindfulness practitioners
- Deliver a school assembly about mindfulness, presented by teachers and students, depending on experience
- Students who are interested/enthusiastic about mindfulness encouraged to share about their practice at public events – school open evenings, governors’ meetings etc
- Mindfulness lead request a regular slot in the school newsletter and ask students who are happy to share to write a blog/article for school newsletter or create a vlog about their practice
- Consider other ways to share with the school community about the mindfulness approaches offered at the school via student’s stories – promote it on your Facebook and Instagram channels for example (within agreed school’s permissions policy)
Staff/whole school approach focused:
- A member or members of SLT (Senior Leadership Team) are openly backing mindfulness-based initiatives within the school
- The ways in which a mindfulness approach can support the wellbeing offer in the school for staff and students is explored further, ie writing it into the school wellbeing policy, for example
- Designated staff member for mindfulness deepens personal understanding by attending at least 3 Pathways Support sessions through the academic year
- Mindfulness training continues to be offered to all school staff with a view to involving the teachers/staff in the school as role-models and skilled guides
- With agreement from SLT, designated staff member for mindfulness guides short practices at start of staff meetings (and potentially other meetings if other staff agreeable)
- Mindfulness lead ensure they have a slot on the NQT/ECT/New staff members INSET offered by setting, to share about mindfulness training and the approach and to signpost to training for those interested
- Staff and students have regular practice sessions – separately or together (eg: a shorter drop-in practice slot at lunchtime for students and staff and/or a longer practice slot for staff before or after school once per week)
- The designated staff member for mindfulness begins to develop a way of showing the school’s journey towards offering a mindfulness approach through a blog, vlog, gathering student and staff stories about the impact of a mindfulness approach in the setting

Join Step 3
You are automatically on Step 3 of the Pathways if you have trained to deliver one of MiSPs following core curricula or The Present:
- dots
- Paws b
- .b
If you want to introduce mindfulness to students but don’t have anyone trained to teach MiSP courses in your setting, please check our Trained Teacher Maps to find teachers in your area.
Thinking about Step 4?
The intention of Step 4 of the MiSP Pathways is to embed mindfulness learning and approaches throughout the setting where appropriate.
These are some things you can do to start to get ready for Step 4.
If you want to keep a record of your development in introducing mindfulness to your setting/school, you could build a MiSP portfolio (optional) and collect evidence of these suggested activities or a record of your own ideas. A completed portfolio will be needed to apply for Step 5 of the Pathways.
Here are some suggested things you can do to GET READY for Step 4 of the Pathways
- Book onto a School Mindfulness Lead course: – once you have taught Paws b or .b TWICE or the complete dots course or The Present entirely once through, you can apply for the School Mindfulness Lead training. You may be eligible for support with funding your training.
- Complete the Pathways Step 3 Portfolio.
- Use the Reflection sheet to consider your setting’s needs for Step 4
