Mindfulness in Schools Project’s (MiSP) mission is to share mindfulness knowledge, skills and attitudes with children and those who care for them through world-leading age-specific curricula and high-quality teacher training.

The feedback we’ve received from children and young people, teachers and others highlights how our initiatives have impacted their lives in and out of the classroom.

What we do

  • Train teachers, first in their understanding and practice of mindfulness, the key foundation to being able to share and model this successfully with children and young people. Secondly, to teach our age-specific mindfulness curricula to children and young people in their school or other educational/youth settings.
  • Provide ongoing support: teachers post-training are invited to become members of MiSP’s Hub community, accessing advice, events, materials and additional training to support their mindfulness practice, teaching and wider school culture.
  • Offer a Pathways approach to exploring, introducing, embedding and sustaining mindfulness in the culture of a school or other youth-focused context, tailored to start wherever you or the setting are in your journey.

Overall reach

Since MiSP was established in 2009, we have trained 8,600+ teachers and estimate that we’ve reached a minimum of 1.1 million children and young people through the sharing of our curricula by these trained teachers.

What is the impact of our curricula on teachers and other educators, children and young people?

Since 2016 we've surveyed over 27,000 children and young people to assess the impact and credibility of our curricula

Impact on children and young people

Since 2016, MiSP has provided a ‘Class Impact’ survey service to measure the impact of curricula (.b, Paws and .breathe) for pupils and teachers. We compile summary reports that can be shared with senior school leaders, governors, other staff, parents and the students themselves.

Between September 2016 and July 2024, 996 teachers and over 27,000 pupils were surveyed on the impact our curricula have had on them.

Ages 7-11 (Paws b course)

“[Paws b] helps you a lot when you are worrying or when you are scared.” (Paws b student)

  • 74% students surveyed would recommend the course to a friend
  • 89% found the course useful
  • 85% are likely to use mindfulness again
  • 73% said it helped with concentration
  • 91% found the course enjoyable

“I liked when we learned about growing happiness, then we passed smiles around the room and it made me really happy.” (Paws b student)

Ages 11-18 (.b course)

“The best thing for me was learning how to stay calm and not overreact.” (.b student)

  • 76% of students surveyed would recommend the course to a friend
  • 62% said it helped them cope with difficulties
  • 73% found the course useful
  • 64% would use what they learnt again
  • 76% found the course enjoyable

Breaking down barriers to access…

As a charity, our work extends beyond the development of curricula and immediate course delivery. We seek funding to ensure accessibility for schools with greater needs and for early career teachers, reinforcing our commitment to widening access to mindfulness, regardless of circumstance.

Subject to funding availability, MiSP offers supported places to schools with higher than average free school meals/ pupil premium, pupils with identified special educational needs (SEN), pupils with English as an additional language, and schools based in rural areas. In addition, MiSP awarded funding under the Early Careers’ Teacher Support Fund covering newly qualified teachers.

In our 2022-23 reporting period, 203 teachers (7%) attended a course with financial support from MiSP.

Since MiSP began, we have had participants from 83 countries join our courses… And around the world

Our public online courses are available in the English language and can be accessed by participants throughout the world. We are deeply appreciative of those MiSP-trained teachers who have generously translated our materials. This has allowed us to offer translated curricula to our Hub community. In addition, official partner organisations deliver our curricula in their local language.

In 2022-23:

  • Participants from 37 countries took MiSP courses
  • 7 overseas partner courses delivered in Denmark, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Hong Kong

Ongoing teaching support

MiSP provides ongoing support through events, practice groups, workshops, and mentoring, enhancing the effectiveness and reach of our mindfulness programs.

In 2022-23, 2586 active Hub members received support through events and dedicated MiSP team assistance, including:

  • 21 Hub practice groups
  • 5 School Mindfulness Lead practice groups
  • 15 Teaching Skills Workshops
  • 21 Teacher Surgeries (group mentoring)
