Teach Paws b Training

Developing teaching and Learning Paws b
The core development team and pupils from Ysgol Pen Y Bryn share their experiences of Paws b

Paws b is a three day teacher training course which prepares participants who have met the prerequisites to teach mindfulness to 7-11 year olds.  The course consists of real-time lessons, pedagogy sessions, discussion groups and opportunities to practise guiding the Paws b exercises with each other.

Our hope for this course is threefold: to equip participants with the materials and understanding of the curriculum to be able to begin teaching the lessons straight away, to continue to support the development of personal mindfulness practice, and to encourage the development of a sense of community amongst participants.

At the end of the course, participants will hopefully feel confident and ready to teach the lessons to young people. Participants will leave as part of a wider network of Paws b teachers, supported by Mindfulness in Schools Project (MiSP), and with access to the following materials via the MiSP website.

  • Student Booklet
  • “How to teach Paws b” Booklet
  • Teacher’s Notes on each lesson
  • PowerPoint slideshow of each lesson
  • An introductory PowerPoint presentation for colleagues

Attendance on this course qualifies participants to a  period of complimentary membership of the Teachers’ Network on the website. This gives access to all materials, listing on the Paws b teacher map, use of a forum and other features. Thereafter an optional £90 annual membership fee is due to continue to have access to the Teachers’ Network and any updated materials.

What are the prerequisites to teach Paws b?

You must have completed in person an 8-week secular mindfulness course and have been practising mindfulness for at least 6 months from the start of your 8-week course and the start of the Teach .b training. The following courses are accepted: .b Foundations, MBSR, MBCT, Finding Peace in a Frantic World, Breathworks, Mindfulness-Based Living Course (MBLC). Please see our formal list of prerequisites for full details.

Can I train others to teach the Paws b curriculum?

If mindfulness is taught to young people by someone who has neither an established personal mindfulness practice nor the specialised and intensive training to teach mindfulness to the age group in question, there are potentially serious implications in terms of the young person’s experience and understanding of mindfulness. At best, through lack of understanding and modelling of mindfulness to the class, young people may be put off mindfulness for life; at worst, there may be safeguarding issues arising around guided practice and discussions in class . While the mindfulness that is covered in both .b and Paws b is relatively short and ‘light’, things do come up during practices which need to be skilfully held and managed by the teacher. This is a large part of what the teacher training for both .b and Paws b involves.
This course does NOT qualify you to train others to deliver the curriculum. Nor may you share the teaching resources with others. If your place on a Teach Paws b or Teach .b course is going to be funded by your school or other organisation, we recommend you make this clear to them before enrolling for this course.

Can I translate the materials?
